The Le Bonheur Headache Center School Guidance Program
The Headache Center at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital has experience of treating migraine headaches in children. Our experience shows that children who attend school regularly, even though they have a headache, have improved outcomes in their headache treatment. The Headache Center values the full academic experience that school provides to children. We have learned that removing a child from school because of headaches can have a negative impact on the child’s academic, medical, and social wellbeing.
The Headache Center school attendance policy is as follows:
• If your child is unable to attend school due to a headache, the parent is expected to contact The Headache Center nurse that morning at ____________ to discuss treatment options.
• School excuses will only be provided by Neurology on the days your child is seen in our clinic or hospital for procedures.
• The Headache Center is committed to supporting your child and recognizes that academic alternatives may need to be considered for your child to be successful in school. We support 504 plans for the children with a chronic illness and will be glad to discuss this with you and provide documentation.
• The Headache Center does not generally support homebound instruction for a child due to headache. If this is requested, the team will discuss this with school personnel and the group will decide the best possible outcome for your child.
If you have any concerns about the impact that headaches may be having on your child’s school performance or school attendance, please feel free to discuss this with us during your child’s clinic visit or call the Social Worker (name) (number) ___________________who manages school concerns.
Thank you,
The Headache Center Team
